The Gables is a development of 30 houses on an attractive tree-lined street, offering a variety of 2, 3 and 4-bedroom units designed with contemporary, open-plan, family living in mind. The site, at Musker Street in Crosby, was previously occupied by a small commercial unit.
Our approach to this scheme was to provide an architecture that is distinctive and contemporary – complementary to the surroundings but clear in vision and approach. The forms used are borrowed from the surrounding context; however, the detailing employed seeks to lift the quality and allow a more efficient use of space. Cranked windows that wrap up into the roof plane create dramatic roof-space accommodation whilst deep reveals and chamfered brickwork add depth and relief to facades.
The public realm is enhanced through active frontages, high-quality landscaping and boundaries, and visually interesting architecture. The layout and massing aid navigation and allow for natural surveillance of public spaces. The encouragement of low vehicle speeds through visual narrowing and tight geometry allows for a shared surface approach, with subtle distinction between vehicle and pedestrian areas.
